Marcia Helen Garrett, age 70, of Vienna, died Friday, January 8, 2021, at Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele.
Marcia Helen was born on December 31, 1950 in Vienna, Georgia to Charles and JoAnne Hargrove. She graduated from Vienna High School in 1968 and studied at the University of Georgia her freshmen year of college until she got strep throat and was treated by the new “Doc” in her hometown and somehow he ended up with strep throat within a few weeks. On August 17, 1969 she married the love of her life, Dr. Robert Carlton Garrett, Sr. She and “Doc” raised their family in the town she has always called “home”, and Vienna remained just that. Following the passing of her beloved husband, Marcia Helen went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business, as well as, graduating with her master’s of business administration from Georgia Southwestern University, in addition to her master’s in community counseling from Columbus State University.
Marcia Helen was an accomplished musician and grew up singing in her church choir, playing the folk guitar, and eventually following in her mother’s footsteps as the pianist and often organist for her church. Vienna raised many children who learned the piano at her instruction. Her passion for music will be remembered by all who knew her. She was also an extraordinary chef who at one time or another has fed family and friends near and far.
Marcia Helen is survived by her son, Robert Carlton Garrett Jr. (Marie) of Sylvester, GA and daughter, Marcia Robyn Garrett of Villa Rica, GA; her sisters Jana Hargrove Powers (Sam Jr) of Cordele, GA and Dinah Hargrove Burns (Alan) of Carmel, IN; her grandsons, Joseph Carson Garrett (Victoria) of Hawkinsville, GA, Peyton Barwick (Morgan) of Savannah, GA and Parker Barwick (Ashley) of Richmond Hill, GA; great granddaughter, Emmie Barwick of Fitzgerald, GA; nieces JoAnna Powers Arnold (Bob) of Americus, GA; Amy Powers Hardin (Charles) of Arabi, GA; Laurie Anne Burns of Indianapolis, IN, Tracy Bradley of Macon, GA and Dana Dotherow of New Braunfels, TX; her nephews, Adam Carson Burns (Ashley) of Lombard, IL and Jim Coffer (Sue) of Brentwood, TN; a host of great nieces and nephews, along with her best friend/honorary sister of 50 years, Ann Gambrell Stripling and honorary brother, Hobby Stripling, Sr.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert Carlton Garrett, Sr.; parents, Charles Driskell Hargrove and JoAnne Carson Bivins of Vienna, GA; mother-in-law,, Clara Culpepper Garrett; father-in-law, Joseph Zeno Garrett; brother-in-law, Richard Garrett of Macon, GA and Joseph Garrett, Jr.
Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, January 12 in Vienna City Cemetery. Due to COVID-19, face masks are encouraged and everyone should socially distance.
