William Calfrey Clark

William Calfrey Clark, (called Calfrey by his family and Bill by his friends), age 95, died Wednesday, December 17, 2014, at his home in Jacksonville, Florida surrounded with the love and support of his children.

Calfrey was the son of the late Flournoy C. and Minnie Anderson Clark.He was born into a Georgia pioneering family established in Laurens, Tattnall, Telfair and Montgomery (now Wheeler) Counties since the late 1700s. He was a World War II veteran attached to the 34th armored battalion stationed in Taunton, England. In July 1944, his unit made land-fall in Cherbourg, France as part of the Normandy campaign. With his battalion, he followed Patton's 3rd Army all over Europe, participating in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns.

Following the war, he made his home in Jacksonville, Florida where he graduated from Jones Business College. In June 1949, he married Martha Marie Griggs from Unadilla, Georgia and they enjoyed 54 happy and loving years of marriage raising their 4 children in Jacksonville.

In the late 1940s and 1950s, he worked as a floor manager for Sears & Roebuck when it was located on the corner of Market and Forsythe streets in downtown Jacksonville. Following his years at Sears, he was a store manager for McDuff Appliances for their Jacksonville Beach and Regency Square stores. In June 1975, he started his own business, Clark Appliances on Ponce de Leon Boulevard in St. Augustine, Florida that is now owned and operated by his son, Don Clark.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha in 2003 and his sister, Ouida Clark Sanger of Athens, Georgia and his two brothers, Robert Clark and Eschol Clark of Alamo, Georgia.

He is survived by his two daughters, Linda Clark Williams and Mary Ann Clark both of Jacksonville, FL; his two sons, James Warren Clark (Karen) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and Donald Elliot Clark (Maggie) of St. Augustine, FL; his 3 grandsons, Kevin Clark (Brittany) of Ann Arbor, MI, Brian Clark and Brad Clark both of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; his step-granddaughter, Savannah James of St. Augustine, FL; a brother-in-law, George Sanger of Athens, GA; a sister-in-law, Eugenia Clark of Alamo, GA and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday, December 22 in the chapel of Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home in Unadilla, GA. Interment will follow in Walnut Cemetery. Rev. James Aycock will officiate.

The family will greet friends 11 AM - 12 noon prior to the service.

Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home of Unadilla has charge of arrangements.
