Luther R. Musselwhite, age 84, of 125 George Street, Vienna, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at his residence.
Born in Colquitt County, he was the son of the late Thomas David Musselwhite and Winnie Ruth Chappel Musselwhite. He was a US Marine Corps veteran. During World War II, he fought in the battle of Iwo Jima and he was a member of the battalion that raised the American Flag on Mt. Suribachi. Following the war, Mr. Musselwhite was a grocer, a watermelon broker and the Constable of Metcalf, GA. He also served as a Postmaster. Mr. Musselwhite earned his bachelor's degree from Valdosta State and his master's from Florida State. He began his teaching career in Vienna in 1964. He taught and coached for many years in the Dooly County Schools, served as a Principal and retired from the central office where he was in charge of transportation. In his retirement years, he enjoyed his vegetable garden and growing pecans. Mr. Musselwhite was a member of Vienna United Methodist Church, the Retired Educators Association and was a foster parent.

He was preceded in death by a son, Luther Musselwhite, Jr., by two brothers, John and Bill Musselwhite and his wife of 62 years, Thedis R. Musselwhite.
Funeral services will be at 3 PM Thursday, December 31 in Vienna United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Vienna City Cemetery.
The family will greet friends 6 - 8 PM Wednesday, December 30 at the funeral home.
