L. A. Oakes, Jr., age 93. of 471 Oak Avenue, Pinehurst, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele.
Born in Irwin County, he was the son of the late Luther Avery Oakes and Martha Fletcher Oakes. Mr. Oakes served with honor during World War II in the US Army Air Corps. He survived the Bataan Death March and spent 3 and a half years in a Japanese POW camp. Following his military service, he worked as a Quality Control Analyst at Robins Air Force Base. He was a member of Pinehurst United Methodist Church, the Wesley Chapel Singing Class, the Southwest Georgia Chapter of Ex-POW's and the DAV.

Melvin Oakes of Dalton
Avery Oakes of Duluth
Sister: Luthera "Cee" Raney of Albany
Grandchildren: 9
Great Grandchildren: 3
He was preceded in death by a son, Gene Oakes, a granddaughter, Stephanie Wasdin and a great granddaughter, Elisa Wasdin.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM Saturday, June 20 in Pinehurst United Methodist Church. Interment with military honors will follow in Pinehurst City Cemetery.
The family will greet friends 6 - 8 PM Friday, June 19 at the funeral home.
