Katherine Eugenia Hearne Sangster, 85, a beloved registered nurse and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, at Legacy Village in Tifton, Georgia. Born on December 15, 1940, in Macon, Georgia, Katherine was deeply committed to her family and community.
Katherine dedicated her career to nursing, working at Athens General Hospital, where she touched the lives of many with her compassion and expertise. Her dedication extended beyond her professional life. More recently she was also very active with the Alzheimer’s Association, where her efforts made a significant impact on those living with the disease and their families.
As a member of Northside Baptist Church in Tifton, Katherine found a community where she thrived spiritually, contributing her time and energy to various church activities. Her faith was an integral part of her life, and she fostered connections that enriched both her life and the lives of those around her.
Katherine had an artistic side, indulging in hobbies such as sewing, crocheting, and reading. She
cherished her daily walks, which allowed her to enjoy the beauty of nature and reflect on the joys of life. Her kind spirit and nurturing nature were evident in all her endeavors.
Katherine is survived by her loving children, Tom Sangster and his wife, Jennifer, of Bogart, Georgia, Kim Sangster of Tifton, and Kate Sangster Lowry and her husband, Michael, of Brandon, Mississippi. She was a proud grandmother to Zeke Lowry and Meghan Sangster, who brought her immense joy. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Murray Stephens and her husband, Charles.
Katherine was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-seven years, Lowell Thomas Sangster; her father, John Hearne; her mother, Wynel Murray Smith; and her brother, John Hearne, Jr.
Although she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love, care, and community service will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege to know her.
Inurnment will be at 1:30 PM Saturday, March 7 at the Sangster Family Cemetery near Vienna.
