John F. Morgan

January 25, 1926 — December 24, 2012

John F. Morgan, age 86, of 677 Pleasant Valley Road, Vienna, died peacefully at his home on Monday, December 24, 2012.

He was born on the family farm near Vienna to the late Scage W. Morgan, Sr. and Mae Butler Morgan. The seventh of nine children, he enjoyed a close family all his life. He attended local schools and worked hard on the farm even as a youngster.

Upon graduation from high school, he attended Georgia Military College. Realizing four of his siblings were serving in World War II, he felt the need to join the army before being drafted. His deployment location was not revealed to him until he and his shipmates spotted the Rock of Gibraltar. He was proud to be in Italy when Mussolini was toppled and recalled the headline, "Fenito Benito!"

Returning to Georgia, he served the rest of his military career in Savannah where he attended a GI branch of UGA before returning to Dooly County to work at, and add to, the family farm.

In 1958, he married Frances Guerry. Three daughters followed and he excelled at fatherhood. Realizing the shift from small family farms to large farming operations was eminent, and after the loss of his longtime employee and mentor, Willie B. Jordan, he retired after 30 years and worked several more years at Southeastern Frozen Foods in Cordele.

Although he enjoyed travel and rock and arrowhead hunting, he felt strong ties to his land and the hard work it demanded, taking great pride in conservation and stewardship.

Although basically shy and quiet, his dry wit and terrific sense of humor were enjoyed by many.

Mr. Morgan was a member of Vienna United Methodist Church and a past member of the American Legion and Kiwanis Club.
