John F. Bradley

December 29, 1914 — March 30, 2010

John F. "Cotton" Bradley, age 95, of 158 Church Street, Lilly, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at Flint River Community Hospital in Montezuma.

Mr. Bradley was born in Pickens County to the late J. W. and Addie Bradley. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1945 with a degree in vocational agricultural education. Before graduating, he served in the US Army during World War II. He served as County Agricultural Agent in Douglas County and then was employed by the Soil Conservation Service in Bryan and Morgan Counties. Mr. Bradley moved back to Chatsworth in 1953 where he was principal of an elementary school, farmed and operated a Western Auto Store. In 1954, he was appointed chairman of Georgia's Farm Service Agency in Athens and in 1955, he became director of the agency. From 1961- 1971, he served with the USDA's consumer and marketing service in Washington, DC and then moved on to serve on the staff of assistant to the US Secretary for intergovernmental affairs in Washington, DC until his retirement in 1975 when he and his first wife, the former Elizabeth Busbee, moved to Lilly. He served as Mayor of Lilly for 27 years, retiring in 2005.

Mr. Bradley was a member of Lilly United Methodist Church, a past member of the Vienna Kiwanis Club, a lifetime member of the American Legion and chairman of Dooly County's Republican Party until 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Terry Bradley; a son, John Walton Bradley; step-children, Douglas Terry (Karen), David Terry (Brenda) and Miriam Ward (Frank); a sister, Emoylees Young.

Funeral services will be at 11 AM Friday, April 2 in Lilly United Methodist Church with interment in Lilly Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will greet friends 6 - 8 PM Thursday, April 1 at the funeral home.
