Joel H. Adkins, age 84, of 215 North Sixth Street, Vienna, died Thursday, October 20, 2005, at Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele.
Joel was born on June 29, 1921 in the house where he resided at the time of his death. His parents were Tilden Adkins and Florrie Morgan Adkins. He served as a Medical Tech Sergeant in the US Army during WWII and was awarded the bronze star for his heroic rescue of patients at a surgical hosptial in the Philippines during an enemy bombing attack. He was an inspector with the State Health Department and following his retirement he owned and operated Joel's Antiques for 25 years. He was still active in the antique business at the time of his death. Joel was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Vienna.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Tilden du Bignon Adkins, Dr. Henry T. Adkins, and Woodrow Wilson Adkins and by his sisters, Emma Clifford Cofer, Eloise Roberta Adkins, Florrie Belle Fokes and Evelyn Morgan Hunter.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, October 23 in First Baptist Church of Vienna. Dr. J. W. Wallis and Dr. Keithen Tucker will officiate and burial will follow in Vienna City Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 6 - 8 PM Saturday, October 22 at the funeral home.
