Jimmie J. Thompson

Jimmie J. Thompson, age 88, of 3151 Marie Circle, Macon, died Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.
Born in Ellijay, he was the son of the late Jim Thompson and Ina Bates Thompson. He was a US Army veteran of World War II having served in the European Theatre. After the war, he farmed for several years while training to become a Machinist. He then went to work at Robins Air Force Base and later became a Machinist Instructor for adults and veterans at Macon Vocational Tech. He retired from Robins AFB after 30 years and taught at Central High School during the day and continued to teach at Macon Vocational Tech at night. He retired from teaching in 1984. Mr. Thompson was a member and Deacon at West Macon Baptist Church for over 10 years before joining Houston Heights Baptist Church. He was a longtime member of the VFW and enjoyed camping, fishing, baseball and spending time with his family and friends. He was a good, hard working and kind man who put his family first. His family, especially his sons, were the center of his life and he taught them everything they know about machine work. This enabled them to build their careers in this field. Mr. Thompson was a man who was loved and respected by many and had a huge impact on everyone he met, young and old.
He is survived byhis wife of 68 years, Eleanor Burnette Thompson of Macon; a son, Roger Thompson (Lisa)of Byron; a daughter-in-law, Jane Thompson of Hawkinsville; a grandson, Gregg Thompson of Macon; and two great grandchildren, Stevie Ray Thompson and Amanda Fairchild (Dustin) of Hawkinsville.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vivian Thompson and by his son, Kenneth Thompson.
Graveside services will be held at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Macon on Saturday, February 23 at 3:00 PM. Rev. Don VanHoozier will officiate.
The family will greet friends from 6 - 8 PM Friday, February 22 at the funeral home or may be contacted at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, c/o Laura Woodward, 505 Old Americus Road, Vienna, GA 31092.
