Jewell J. Bowen

July 15, 1908 — May 16, 2003

Jewell Joiner Bowen, age 94, of 3006 Pine Street, Unadilla died Friday, May 16, 2003, in Perry.

Born in Dooly County, she was the daughter of the alte James V. Joiner and Lillian Noble Joiner and was the widow of Rooney L. Bowen. She attended Georgia State Normal College in Athens and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She taught at Unadilla High School, Perry Elementary School and Westfield Schools.

She was a member of Unadilla United Methodist Church, the Mary Murray Sunday School Class and the Evening Circle. Mrs. Bowen was honored by the church for her service with the presentation of the "Quiet Disciple" award. She was also honored as an outstanding servant of the Lord at the 1983 Homecoming Service. She served on the Administrative Board, the Council of Ministries, the Worship Committee and served as treasurer of her Sunday School Class for many years.

In 1999, the City of Unadilla recognized her many years of service to the youth of the community by naming a recreational park in her honor. She was a member of the Dooly County Retired Teachers Association and the AARP. She was a former member of the National Education Association and the Georgia Education Association.

A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she exemplified the best of Christian principles-unconditional love, humility, charity and forgiveness.

Great Grandchilldren: 3

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 17 at Unadilla United Methodist Church with Rev. Ernest Bass and Dr. Doug Holden will officiate. Burial will follow in Walnut Cemetery. Lance Broach, Rooney L. Bowen, III, Neil Joiner, Jimmy Joiner, Lee Wiley and Ben Wilkes will serve as pallbearers.

The family will greet friends at the fellowship hall of Unadilla United Methodist Church immediately following the graveside service.

The family requests donations be made in Mrs. Bowen's memory to Unadilla United Methodist Church, c/o Christine Collins, 9365 Third District Road, Unadilla, Georgia 31091.
