Irwin P. Churchwell

August 21, 1946 — July 7, 2013

Irwin P. Churchwell, age 66, of 1810 Pleasant Valley Road, Vienna, died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at his residence.

Irwin was born in Baldwin County but resided in Dooly County most of his life. He graduated from Jenkins Elementary School and was a 1964 graduate of Vienna High School. After serving as a military policeman in the United States Air Force, he returned home and attended Georgia Southwestern State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education. He was a member of several clubs and organizations at the college level.

Following graduation, he became a social worker with the Sumter County DFACS. After several years, he was assigned to the Crisp County DFACS and worked as a family preservation worker and as an adult and child abuse investigator. He also held several positions that were aging-related such as being on an advisory board for child abuse prevention. Mr. Churchwell was also instrumental in establishing the Gateway House where foster children could meet with family members in a safe environment and a family atmosphere.

After retiring in 2007, he enjoyed travelling and hobbies of woodworking and photography. His favorite hobby was restoring a classic car. He also performed functions in volunteer work.

Mother: Pauline V. Churchwell of Vienna

Brother: Alton Churchwell (Lana) of Cordele

Grandchildren: Samuel Smith, Sadie Smith and Barrett Buchanan

Nephew: Derek Churchwell of Cordele

He is also survived by his life-partner and companion, Maria Green who was always at his side during his cancer treatment.

He was preceded in death by his father, John B. Churchwell.

Funeral services will be at 11 AM Thursday, July 11 in the chapel of Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home of Vienna with interment in Vienna City Cemetery.
