Evelyn Fendley Sangster, age 85, of 5897 Tippettville Road, Vienna, peacefully passed from this world into one of everlasting joy and eternal love on Tuesday, July 31, 2012.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, she was an honor graduate of Shawnee High School and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Louisville in 1952. She taught elementary education at McFarren School from 1952-56 and attended Walnut Street Baptist Church where she met Harold Lamar Sangster, then a student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. After a brief courtship, they married in 1954.
Her marriage and life were dedicated to serving and teaching others. Affectionately known by family and friends as "The Rev and Ev," they served Georgia Baptist Churches in Dalton, Lakeland, Garden City, Tallapoosa, Toccoa, Hiawasee, Cordele and Vienna. One of her passions was music and singing and she directed children's choirs in every church they served. Her love for missions was demonstrated through the teaching of hundreds of mission studies with the Women's Missionary Union (WMU) where she also served at the local and state level. For 13 years, she taught mission studies at Camp John Hope, a summer camp with the General Missionary Baptist Convention. Even into her 80's, she was directing and teaching Vacation Bible School at Tippettville Baptist Church in Vienna. She continued to teach elementary school until her retirement in 1995 in Stephens County, Georgia. Truly, she was destined to teach, and she did it well.
