Eugene H. Methvin

Eugene H. Methvin, age 77, of McLean, Virginia, died Thursday, January 19, 2012 at his residence.

He was a native of Vienna, Georgia where his parents, the late Claude M. Methvin, Jr. and Madge Hilburn Methvin, were editors and publishers of the Vienna News.

He studied journalism at the University of Georgia School of Journalism. On campus, he lettered in football and debate. Mr. Methvin served in the United States Air Force as a jet fighter pilot flying the F-86 and F-102 all weather interceptors.

He joined the staff of Reader's Digest in 1960, serving as a reporter, editor and senior editor over his 42-year career. During his award-winning career,
he covered the Supreme Court, Kremlin politics and international terror groups.

In 1995, the Washington, DC chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists named Methvin to its "Hall of Fame" for "exemplary professional achievements, outstanding service to other members of the profession and lifelong dedication to the highest standards of journalism."

Mr. Methvin was a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church in McLean, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, the former Barbara Lester of Byromville.

He is survived by his daughters, Helen Methvin Payne (Chris) of Arlington, VA and Claudia Methvin (John Trent) of Edinburg, VA and his granddaughters, Caroline and Julia Payne.

Funeral services will be held 2PM Saturday, January 28 at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in McLean, Virginia under the direction of Money & King Funeral Home of Vienna, Virginia. (703) 938-7440

Local funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 4 in Vienna First Baptist Church. Interment with military honors will follow in the Methvin family plot in Vienna City Cemetery.

The family will greet friends 7 - 9 PM Friday, February 3 at Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home of Vienna.
