Charles G. Speight

April 2, 1922 — September 22, 2025

Charles G. Speight, age 103, of 220 Azalea Drive, Unadilla, died Monday, September 22, 2025, at Atrium Health Navicent in Macon.

Born April 2, 1922, to the late Amory and Ruth Philpot Speight, Charles was a lifelong resident of Unadilla whose life embodied devotion — to his family, his community, his country and his Lord. After graduating from Unadilla High School, he attended the University of Georgia before answering the call to serve his country.  As a Navy fighter pilot in the Pacific theater during World War II, Charles flew courageous missions from the decks of the aircraft carriers Yorktown and Lexington. He later shared those experiences with countless groups, humbly honoring the memory of those who served alongside him.

In 1944, Charles married his beloved high school sweetheart, Patricia “Patsy” Holliman. Together, they built a life in Unadilla filled with faith, family and community. As devoted parents, they never missed a school event, a ball game, or a church program, always present with love and encouragement. Charles joined his father, Amory, and brother, Joe, in running Unadilla Wholesale Company, which served middle Georgia faithfully for many years. He was a member of the Unadilla Lions Club and the Dooly County Chamber of Commerce.  Charles served as a director and in other capacities in the Exchange Bank of Unadilla, Citizens Bank and State Bank & Trust.  His leadership in the Coffee Club was invaluable.

A man of deep faith, Charles loved the Lord with all his heart. For more than 60 years, he faithfully taught his Sunday School class, which was later named in his honor — a testament to the lives he touched with his steady guidance and gentle spirit. Always ready to lend a hand, he lived as a true servant, offering friendship, encouragement, and generosity to all who knew him. His quiet strength and unwavering kindness left an imprint on his community that will never fade.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy, his brothers, Amory and Joe, and his grandson, Chuck Speight. He leaves behind a legacy of love carried on by his daughter, Patti Davis of Unadilla; sons, Charlie Speight (Cathy) of Unadilla and David Speight (Wendy) of Atlanta; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of friends who cherished his presence.

Charles’ life was, in every sense, a life well-lived — marked by courage, devotion, and service. He was admired by all who knew him, and his memory will continue to inspire and comfort his family, his church, and his beloved community.
