Burton Stubbs

Willard Burton Stubbs, age 79, of 2185 SE Harding Street, Port Saint Lucie, Florida, died Monday, May 30, 2016 at his residence.

Born in Ocala, Florida, he was the son of the late Willard Wright Stubbs and Merris Virginia Lovell Stubbs. He was a former resident of Vienna.

Burton proudly served this great country with honor as a Naval Flight Officer in the United States Navy, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After retirement, from the Department of Defense, he and his wife, Shelby relocated from Pensacola, Florida back to Vienna where he remained active in civic affairs. He became the first chairman of the Vienna Historic Preservation Commission. He also served multiple terms as chairman of both the Vienna Downtown Development Authority and the Vienna Development Authority. He was a member of Lake Blackshear Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.

Burton was preceded in death by his loving wife of more than 53 years, Shelby Andrews Stubbs.

He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Wright (Richard) of Cordele; a son, Dr. James Stubbs (Joanne) of Milton; his grandchildren, Isabella Stubbs of Milton, Stephanie Stubbs of Milton, Anna Stubbs of Milton, Alissa Wilkerson (Eric) of Cordele; his great grandchild, Amelia Wilkerson of Cordele.

After Shelby's death, Burton married Mary Lynda Hudson.

Burton did not desire flowers, a visitation or a memorial service. His request was a simple graveside interment service which will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 8 in Vienna City Cemetery. Rev. Phil Streetman will officiate.

Memorial gifts should be made to any charity that will benefit American veterans.
